Right next to the Jaguar is something more down-to-earth, but an equally important part of auto history ... a 1953 Morris Minor convertible. What great condition it's in!
Then there's this gleaming 1957 Dodge Kingsway - stylish!
And on the far side of the Dodge, that's a 1946 Jaguar Mark 4 (1.5 litre) - there's work being done on its steering but it will soon be fit to go on the road again:
I'm not a car buff, but I do appreciate the elegance of these classic models and the determination of enthusiasts such as Shankar to preserve and maintain such important aspects of our history. I hadn't expected to come across such classic cars in Chennai - but then this city never fails to surprise.
And this is simply the overspill of this vintage car collection - Shankar also has a 1927 Austin 7 (still able to do the Chennai-Pondicherry vintage car run in a creditable four hours) and a 1937 Rolls Royce Phantom. They often have full ownership history: who first bought them and how they made the long journey out to India, so providing a window on a story of social and economic change.
