Betty Reid (1915-2004) was a full-time worker at the Communist Party headquarters at King Street for many years, first working there in 1942. This interview covers her work for the CP and her early involvement with the left, and in particular with Victor Gollancz and the Left Book Club. She was for a time responsible for dealing with attempts by the intelligence and security agencies to infiltrate the CP and carry out covert surveillance. She later discovered that her own nanny had been an MI5 plant.
This interview took place at her home at Highgate in north London on 25 February 1993. The historian Kevin Morgan wrote a good obituary of Betty Reid in the Guardian.
