D.N. Kaul - born 1921 - was in late 1947 an assistant superintendent of police in Srinagar. He retired as Director General of Police for Jammu and Kashmir in 1980 and moved to Delhi in 1990. He is from a Kashmiri pandit family in Srinagar.
This interview is largely given over to his vivid recollections of the approach of the tribal raiders from Pakistan at the end of October 1947, the response in Srinagar and the eventual repulse of the invaders.
