A wonderful weekend at Kovalam, a fishing village twenty miles south of Chennai - accompanied by Anu ... the resort hotel there is where we spent part of our honeymoon twenty-two years ago,
As I was strolling along the beach one morning, I saw the local fishermen - perhaps forty of them - hauling in the nets. I suspect the nets had been placed by small boat, and then collectively the fishing community dragged the catch onto the beach.
As the nets approached the shore, several of the fishermen waded into the water, splashing and making a commotion - to force the fish into the far end of the net where they wouldn't be able to jump out as the catch was hauled onto the sand.
The fine-meshed red net was alive with thrashing, wriggling fish - thousands of them, most very tiny.
The larger fish were put into pails - and this is where the women took over. The men lay the nets, haul them in and sort the fish ... the women sell them.
