 Say hello to Don Juan Ruiz de Vergara. This wonderful and very accomplished alabaster effigy of him (at least, we think it's him) lies in a Norman crypt in Clerkenwell. Not that this Don Juan ever set foot in Clerkenwell or anywhere nearby. I said my own salaam to him during Clerkenwell Design Week. This is a brilliant event! It's free (though you have to register) and you get access to all sorts of wonderful hidden away places where exhibitors have taken space: this crypt, the stunning Old Sessions House on Clerkenwell Green, the underground cells of the Victorian Clerrkenwell House of Detention, that sort of thing. And you can sometimes get offered a free glass of bubbly. Mind you, it's a three-day week. This year's event ends today.
The crypt is under the Priory Church of St John of Jerusalem in St John's Square, just a short stroll from Clerkenwell Green. It dates from the twelfth century. Our Don Juan was a Castilian Knight Hospitaller who died fighting the Turks off the coast of Marseilles. The sixteenth century effigy may have been initially located in Valladolid Cathedral in Spain. It was transferred to Clerkenwell in 1914.  And the spookiest detail: yes, that is a child lying at Don Juan's feet. A grieving child? A young servant? Someone buried in the same tomb? A detailed description says this is a 'sleeping page'. Let's hope so!  But Don Juan and his young friend lie in serene surroundings. if you can get a chance to visit this crypt, seize it!
